Reverse ETL copies modelled data from a data warehouse back into operational tools such as CRMs, ad platforms and email systems so teams can act on it.

Part of the Learn hub and the customer data glossary.

What it means in practice

ETL means extract, transform, load: moving data from operational systems into a warehouse. Reverse ETL runs the other way. A scheduled job runs a query or reads a modelled table in the warehouse, compares it with the last run, and sends the changes to a CRM, email tool, ad platform or support system through that tool's API.

It appeared because teams already modelled customers in the warehouse and wanted to use those models without building separate pipelines. Hightouch and Census (acquired by Fivetran in May 2025 and now Fivetran Activations) popularised the category. Reverse ETL is the activation layer of a composable customer data platform (CDP).

The limits matter. Syncs are usually scheduled, so latency can range from minutes to hours, which suits audiences but not real-time decisions. Identity resolution, consent and suppression must already be built into the warehouse models, because the sync tool does not apply them. And every sync copies personal data out of the warehouse, so each destination needs the right contract and a field allowlist.

Example (health insurance): a warehouse model selects members due a seasonal vaccination reminder and syncs member ID, first name and preferred channel to the messaging platform. The model excludes anyone on the suppression list, and no clinical fields are synced.

Frequently asked questions

Is reverse ETL a customer data platform?

On its own, no. It moves modelled data out of a warehouse. A composable design adds event collection, identity resolution, consent and decisioning around it.

Is reverse ETL real time?

Usually scheduled or micro-batch. Some tools offer near-real-time syncs. Check the latency you need against each tool's documented sync frequency.

Does reverse ETL keep data private?

It does the opposite: it copies data out of the warehouse. Privacy depends on field allowlists, contracts with each destination and deletion propagation.
