Activation is when a customer data platform (CDP) delivers profiles, segments or events to the channels and tools, such as email, ads or CRM, that act on them.

Part of the Learn hub and the customer data glossary.

What it means in practice

Activation is the output side of the platform. A profile or segment is no use until it reaches the tool that acts on it: an email platform sending a message, an advertising platform building an audience, a CRM showing an agent a customer's status, a website personalisation layer. Delivery modes include batch audience syncs, streamed events, API lookups at the moment of need, webhooks and file exports.

Because activation is where data leaves the platform, it is where governance must bite. Before anything is sent, check consent and the suppression list for the purpose; send only the fields the destination needs; confirm the destination is covered by the right contract (a data processing agreement and, for protected health information, a business associate agreement); and log what was sent, to whom and under what basis. Activation should also be reversible: when a person is suppressed or deleted, the change must propagate downstream.

Closed-loop measurement completes the cycle: deliveries, opens and conversions return to the platform as events. Match rates and sync health are the usual operational metrics.

Reverse ETL is activation performed from a warehouse.

Example (hospital system): a marketing team activates a flu-shot reminder audience to its contracted messaging provider with name, contact details and channel preference only. It does not send a "visited cardiology" audience to an advertising platform, a pattern that is a recognised risk area in US healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between activation and integration?

Integration is the technical connection. Activation is the business act of putting a segment or profile to work through it, which adds governance such as consent checks and field selection.

Is activation real time?

It can be. Audience syncs are often scheduled, while event-triggered activation and API lookups are near real time. Match the mode to the use case.

Why govern activation specifically?

It is the point where data leaves your control. Consent, contracts and field limits applied here prevent most downstream compliance problems.
